It came on the same night as hundreds gathered for the UQ Union AGM, with many attending to discuss the university’s links with companies that supply arms to Israel.

Text messages were also sent to people nearby alerting them that police were active in the area.

“There is a police incident in the Great Court and surrounding buildings. Please evacuate the area until further notice,” the message said.

A university spokesman said police were notified after receiving the “anonymous tip”.

They said part of the campus was evacuated while the matter was investigated, but the assembly was not affected.

The university describes the Great Court as the “heart” of the St Lucia campus and “a popular meeting place for decades”.
