Round 30/57: Norris pits and returns to the lead – a bit of luck for him as the field is slowed by the safety car. Norris is ahead of the rest and can extend his lead, this is a very good moment for him.
Round 28/57: Florida’s Logan Sargent dropped out in his home race, a shame. And the safety car is out, which could play into Norris’ hands. Sargent gets out of his car and appears to be fine.
Round 27/57: Norris leads – possibly briefly – behind Piastri and Sainz. Verstappen is 11 seconds behind in second place. But Max has to regain the lead when Norris pits.
Round 26/57: Verstappen’s hit at the chicane seems to have affected things for everyone: “It’s impossible to see the curb in the chicane,” Hamilton said on team radio.
Round 25/57: Verstappen is now on the hards, which most people have switched to after starting on the mediums. Norris set the fastest lap, he is third.
Lap 24/57: Verstappen pits – it’s a nice fast one – and Piastre leads for now. It didn’t look like there was any damage from the moment Max hit that cone as he was quick in and out of the pit lane. Verstappen returned to the track in fourth place.
Round 23/57: The virtual safety car is on after this cone has drifted onto the track. Someone will remove it – it can be dangerous if it flies into a car or into a crowd. And the goal seems to have been achieved as the virtual safety car is now ready.
Round 22/57: A rare miss by Verstappen who hooks a pin at the chicane, but it bounces in the middle of the track and doesn’t affect him much. They may need the virtual car for safety while they clear the debris.
Round 20/57: Your top 10:
1) Verstappen
2) Piastres
3) Sainz
4) Norris
5) Hamilton
6) Leclerc
7) Russell
8) Tsunoda

Round 19/57: Perez pits and Norris moves up to fifth. Perez re-enters ninth. Verstappen’s lead is up to 3.5 seconds. Leclerc pits and returns to sixth place after a fast pit of just under two seconds.
Tour 18/57: Verstappen maintains his lead of just over three seconds.
Tour 17/57: The battle between Norris and Perez for fifth place is the most interesting duel in this race so far. But Peres is holding his ground for now.
Round 16/57: Verstappen’s lead is just north of three seconds for the first time in this race.
Tour 15/57: All from Kevin Magnussen in 13th place is now on hard tires and pits. Leclerc records new fastest lap.
Tour 14/57: Norris bites Perez, who slips a bit into fifth, but the Mexican driver holds him off.
Tour 13/57: Verstappen maintains a comfortable lead with a lead of 2.955sec and Piastri also looks pretty solid in second.
Tour 12/57: Russell overtakes Hulkenberg at his second attempt and is eighth, just behind Hamilton. Hulkenberg then pits. Many drivers come early for tire changes.
Tour 11/57: Alex Albon is the first driver in the pits – he continues with hard tires. Russell tries to overtake Hulkenberg after Hamilton passes the German, but he holds him back.
Tour 10/57: Hamilton overtook Hulkenberg. Top 10 so far:
1) Verstappen
2) Piastres
3) Leclerc
4) Sainz
5) Peres
6) Norris
7) Hamilton
8) Hulkenberg
9) Russell
10) Tsunoda
Tour 8/57: Perez is being investigated for a possible false start. Verstappen’s lead over Piastri is now close to three seconds. And news is coming: Perez is not threatened by this possible false start.
Tour 7/57: Hamilton, who dropped to 10th at one point, fought his way up to eighth with some gutsy overtaking.
Round 6/57: Verstappen can handle his tires in this heat because he has a decent lead – just over two seconds – but not as far as he’s used to.
Tour 4/57: Piastri is second! His best finish this season is fourth and he looks set to improve on that today. Perez, who almost beat Verstappen at the first corner of the race, dropped to fifth place.
Tour 3/57: Piastri records the fastest lap of the race so far and flies to the front. Verstappen has a lead of 1.877 seconds.
Round 2/57: Lewis Hamilton opted to start on hard tires and he struggled for grip and dropped from eighth to 10th.
Tour 1/57: Perez almost beat Verstappen into the first corner, but the world champion survived and is leading after the first lap, it will be hard to catch him now. The big mover, however, is Oscar Piastri, who climbs from sixth to third. Leclerc remains second.
The main hope for the chasing group is for Verstappen to crash at turn one at a track where it is incredibly difficult to overtake. We’ll see how this plays out very soon: the pilots are nearing the end of their formation tour.
The first 14 on the starting grid – with the exception of Lewis Hamilton – are all on medium tyres. It should be a one-stop race, with those drivers switching to hards later.
Just a reminder that Max Verstappen has never lost in Miami. It’s like he needs help.
Cameras flash to a mural of Ayrton Senna, who died 30 years ago this week. Here’s a tribute to the man and his legacy from our very own Giles Richards:
We’ve posted this before, but we remind you once again about the starting grid:
1 Max Verstappen (Sun) Red Bull 1 min 27.241 sec, 2 Charles Leclerc (Mon) Ferrari 1:27.382, 3 Carlos Sainz Jr (Spa) Ferrari 1:27.455, 4 Sergio Perez (Mexico) Red Bull 1:27.460, 5 Lando Norris (Great Britain) McLaren 1:27.594, 6 Oscar Piastri (Australia) McLaren 1:27.675, 7 George Russell (Great Britain) Mercedes GP 1:28.067, 8 Lewis Hamilton (Great Britain) Mercedes GP 1:28.107, 9 Nico Hulkenberg ( Germany) Haas F1 1:28.146, 10 Yuki Tsunoda (Japan) RB 1:28.192, 11 Lance Stroll (Can) Aston Martin 1:28.222, 12 Pierre Gasly (France) Alpine 1:28.324, 13 Esteban Ocon (France) Alpine 1 :28.371 , 14 Alexander Albon (Ta) Williams 1:28.413, 15 Fernando Alonso (Spa) Aston Martin 1:28.427, 16 Valtteri Bottas (Fin) Kick Sauber 1:28.463, 17 Logan Sargent (USA) Williams 1:28.487, 18 Daniel Ricciardo (Aus) RB 1:28.617, 19 Kevin Magnussen (Den) Haas F1 1:28.619, 20 Guanyu Zhou (Chn) Kick Sauber 1:28.824.
Daniel Ricciardo will start 20th on the grid: “I will try to do something special,” he says. Which will be important given where he starts.
Ferrari’s Frédéric Vasseur tells Martin Brandl that the first lap will be important at a track where it is difficult to overtake: “We know that track position will be crucial.”
Here’s Martin Brandl for the web walk. He chats with Miami’s own Camila Cabello, who reveals she’s here because she likes “fast cars” — a good choice to come to the Grand Prix. However, he deflects Patrick Mahomes, apparently not a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. Then Brundle avoids Zinedine Zidane because he can’t speak English – what does he have against the all-time greats? Brundle then chatted with Susie Wolff for a while before noticing that Lewis Hamilton’s car had a big exhaust – the kind of internal stuff you get when you’re on the grid.
Bernie Owen emails a prediction: “Here’s the score. Verstappen wins, the others in any order you want, 39 seconds plus behind. It’s so exciting.”
Seeing that this track is very difficult to overtake, Max is in pole and recent F1 history, you are probably exactly.
Let’s take a look at some pictures of famous people! Ed Sheeran played a few songs before yesterday’s qualifier. Glad to see he’s wearing a hat considering his skin type – Miami is not a safe place for gingers
Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat earned $45 million this season, making him one of the few people who can afford the hospitality at this year’s GP. And even got to look at some cars with it.
It’s hot in Miami (for a change) with temperatures around 28C/82F with reports of overheating tires on track today. ESPN’s Ted Kravitz believes that means drivers are likely to use a one-stop strategy for today’s race, starting with the medium tires before switching to the hards – which overheat the least – for the longer, second leg.
Lando Norris is on ESPN answering a lot of important questions, the first of which is: does he think he could beat George Russell in a fight. He thinks he can: no doubt somewhere Jake Paul has seen who his next money-spinning scheme will be against.
Just a quick reminder about our opening table today. The bold and forward Max Verstappen is in first position, which may surprise you:
1 Max Verstappen (Sun) Red Bull 1 min 27.241 sec, 2 Charles Leclerc (Mon) Ferrari 1:27.382, 3 Carlos Sainz Jr (Spa) Ferrari 1:27.455, 4 Sergio Perez (Mexico) Red Bull 1:27.460, 5 Lando Norris (Great Britain) McLaren 1:27.594, 6 Oscar Piastri (Australia) McLaren 1:27.675, 7 George Russell (Great Britain) Mercedes GP 1:28.067, 8 Lewis Hamilton (Great Britain) Mercedes GP 1:28.107, 9 Nico Hulkenberg ( Germany) Haas F1 1:28.146, 10 Yuki Tsunoda (Japan) RB 1:28.192, 11 Lance Stroll (Can) Aston Martin 1:28.222, 12 Pierre Gasly (France) Alpine 1:28.324, 13 Esteban Ocon (France) Alpine 1 :28.371 , 14 Alexander Albon (Ta) Williams 1:28.413, 15 Fernando Alonso (Spa) Aston Martin 1:28.427, 16 Valtteri Bottas (Fin) Kick Sauber 1:28.463, 17 Logan Sargent (USA) Williams 1:28.487, 18 Daniel Ricciardo (Aus) RB 1:28.617, 19 Kevin Magnussen (Den) Haas F1 1:28.619, 20 Guanyu Zhou (Chn) Kick Sauber 1:28.824.
Tom will be here in a moment. Meanwhile, here’s how Saturday’s qualifying went:
Max Verstappen resolutely stayed very much on top in qualifying, continuing his unbeaten run of the season with another comfortable pole for the Miami Grand Prix. But after him Fernando Alonso is set to agree with Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA. Alonso was angry and disappointed that they were unable to punish Lewis Hamilton after a controversial incident in the Saturday morning sprint, claiming Hamilton had “ruined a lot of people’s races”.
For Sunday’s GP, Verstappen once again held all the cards with his sixth straight pole this season, beating Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz into second and third by just over a tenth of a second, having already taken victory in the sprint race.
He won the 100km race with relative ease from pole to flag in something of a procession enlivened by an incident at the opening corner. Hamilton made an opportunistic move up the inside at turn one from the start, a dive that sent Alonso crashing into team-mate Lance Stroll, who then took Lando Norris’ McLaren and put him out of the race.
