Emergency services were called to Jersey Road in Blackett at around 8.45am to find a 27-year-old man seriously injured.
Police said the victim, who was wearing hi-vis, was hit by the ute and dragged for about 100 meters before the vehicle fled the scene.
Paramedics tried to treat the man, but he died from his injuries.
Inspector Shane Raney told reporters that investigations were at an early stage, but police believed the incident was related to road rage.
“Apparently the victim got out of the vehicle after being threatened by the car that was following him and apparently words were said,” Raney said.
“It’s devastating and bad for the victim’s family.
Police released CCTV footage of the white SUV in an appeal for information to track down the driver.
The vehicle is described as having a metal tray, a black hood and a black tool box with metal racks on top.
“I urge the driver to come out and surrender to the police because we will find you,” Rani said.
Anyone with CCTV or CCTV footage, or information about the attack, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
