How a t-shirt stopped this autonomous car in its tracks

A T-shirt with a picture of a stop sign tricked numerous autonomous vehicles into stopping, revealing how sensitive their safety systems are.
Arizona resident Jason Carr decided to test out Waymo’s robotaxi self-driving systems by donning a T-shirt with a pretty convincing stop sign logo and standing near the edge of the road.
When looking at the fake “Stop” sign, the Waymo autonomous taxi – based on a Jaguar I-Pace – stops completely, only to resume driving when Mr. Carr walks away or hides the T-shirt.

After being questioned about the methodology, with some commentators claiming the car only stopped because it spotted a pedestrian in the road, Mr Carr put the T-shirt back on and stood on a footpath instead.
Despite the change, the same result emerged, with the Waymo robot stalling in three of the four additional tests, demonstrating that this wasn’t just a one-time glitch.

These videos reveal the risks of showing how easy it can be to fool autonomous vehicles into following unofficial directions. However, they also reflect how sensitively the safety systems are calibrated.
While Waymo didn’t face the same hurdles as the now-defunct cruise robotics service, an investigation into the former company was launched in February after one of his vehicles allegedly struck a bicyclist in San Francisco.
